SMS

When a company decides to deploy the feature SMS, it has to think about the following questions in order to find the perfect solution:

·Does the company only want to send short messages or is the receiving of short messages also important?

·How many short messages are sent / received every day?

·In which mobile telephony network (in Germany: D1, D2, O2, E-Plus or others) short messages are sent?

Sending short messages does cause costs which is another fact that has to be considered. Some providers offer already special SMS rates, with that a special amount (e.g. 50 short messages) is for free per month. For more information, please refer to the mobile telephony network provider.

An SMS always has 128bit - max 160 standard characters (without umlauts or special characters). If longer texts are sent, they are split into several SMS and put back together at the receiver

The following connections and configurations are available in ixi-UMS Enterprise:

·ISDN Adapter with configuration "SMS via fixed lines"

The sending and the reception of SMS is possible.

"SMS via fixed lines" is a service in the PSTN, which delivers messages either to the PSTN or to the GSM network.

The sender number (D-channel information) is used as sender number. You can also answer this.

Remark:

The D-channel information is transferred as CallingPartyNumber in the ISDN SETUP message respectively if use SIP in the INVITE message in From URI. Please note that this information may also be used by the PBX, e.g. for the billing. Normally, only the user-individual extension is passed on to the PBX by the ixi-UMS Kernel (In this case, only the extension may be entered in the field). The PBX adds the extension to the CallingPartyNumber when the call is transmitted.

Please ask your mobile telephony network provider whether this service is available in your network.

·Mobile Phone / Pager / GSM Data Adapter

The sending and the reception of SMS is possible.

In this configuration, the SMS is directly sent to the mobile telephony network by mobile phone / GSM data adapter. The hardware is connected to the PC on that the ixi-UMS Kernel is installed via COM or LAN-interface.

The sender number is the mobile number of the SIM-card in the mobile phone / GSM data adapter. SMS can be received via this "mobile number" (number of the SIM-card). In order to send SMS to single users, a so-called rotuing information in form of the extension, directly followed by "#", must be put in front of the message - <DDI>#<text message>.

Example:

The message "789#short message" is interpreted as in the following:

- 789: Extension (DDI) of the user

- #: delimiter between DDI and text of the SMS

- A short message: Text delivered to the user

In order to be able to assign the message to the respective user, the ixi-UMS Kernel location address (e.g. +49 8142 4799) is put in front of the DDI.

This way, you get the UMS-number of the user (e.g. +49 8142 4799789)

·SMS Large Account via ISDN X.31/X.25 and TCP/IP Protocols

SMS Large Account is meant for companies sending a lot of short messages (e.g. for marketing purposes).

Most mobile phone providers offer so-called "Large Accounts" (LA) for customers who need to send more than 10.000 short messages per month. A direct connection to the SMSC (Short Message Service Center) is established. The major providers provide different connection modes (X.25, X.31 and TCP/IP).

Beside the faster and cheaper sending, the reception of short messages is also possible. If you want to make use of this feature, the service provider sets up a co-called

and you get one "Mobile Phone Number". Other users now can send a short message to this number (See "Mobile Phone/Pager/GSM Daten Adapter") and the ixi-UMS Kernel is notified by the SMSC as soon as the message has been received. The ixi-UMS Kernel now picks up the message at the provider and delivers it to you.

·SMS via HTTP-Provider

ixi-UMS Enterprise offer SMS dispatch using several providers. To use these services, you must be registered with one of the providers listed who will invoice you for this service.

Fees may vary depending on the provider.

With some providers you have to have a static IP in order to use the service.

Simply compare the various providers and pick out the most favourable one for you. The service User account has to be activated so that a user is able to use the SMS text message dispatch.

Depending on the provider, you can also provide the reply address in the request.

In principle, every service provider can be connected if it has a HTTP GET or POST interface.

Requirement: The ixi-UMS Kernel server can establish an Internet connection to the provider.
